New family to continue legacy of popular Tri-State outdoor adventure spot

BROOKVILLE, Ind. (WKRC) — A new chapter begins for Morgan’s Canoe as Brogan and Chelsea Orcutt take the helm of the beloved outdoor adventure spot in Brookville.

The couple, who recently purchased the business, assured that the traditional Morgan experience will continue this summer without interruption.

“We hope over the years we will be able to put our own little twists and spins on things as we continue to expand,” said the Orcutts. “From different lodging and camping options, getting more boats, and things like that. So, there’s going to be new things hopefully. But for the most part, as people come in, we want that same traditional Morgan experience that everyone’s loved up to this point.”

Currently, the Whitewater River is running too high for the hundreds of canoes, kayaks, rafts, and tubes at Morgan’s livery to hit the water. However, the Indiana waterway is expected to come alive soon, as it has for over 50 years. Dirk Morgan, one of five brothers involved in the family business, reflected on the legacy started by their parents, Bob and June, in 1969 at the Ft. Ancient location before expanding to Brookville in 1971.

“My father picked this river many years ago and started this operation in 1971 because he knew that it was a beautiful river that was still very much unspoiled,” said Morgan.

The Orcutts, who are expecting their first child this summer, are eager to continue the family-oriented tradition.

“I mean, I think that could have also been what has, you know, bonded us. But we’re also going to be raising our children here, too. It’s been a family business, and it’s going to continue to be a family business. Slightly different last name, but same goals, same objectives,” said Chelsea Orcutt.

Brogan Orcutt, who has experience running outdoor companies and coaching youth sports, plans to introduce exciting additions to the water sports and camping offerings.

“The skies are big, the river is beautiful. So, it’s hard to just not be sort of in an awe state when you come into a place like this,” said Orcutt.

The Morgan brothers will remain involved this summer to assist with the transition.

“We’re going to be here helping them with that transition. And so, we encourage all of our customers to come out and see us, as we kind of have our last summer out here. And we’re going to make it fun. They’re going to have a lot of fun events,” said Rob Morgan.

Meanwhile, the Morgan family’s Warren County property has been acquired by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for a nature preserve. In a statement on their website, Morgan’s Canoe said:

“It’s a huge win for the Lucky Little Miami River and area conservation! Little Miami Conservancy and the ODNR have acquired five properties and over 25 acres along the river from the Morgan family.”
