Best Outdoor Adventure in Oklahoma: Elk Mountain Trail

I might get shade for this, but I’m going to say it anyway: I’m not much of an outdoorsy person. Don’t get me wrong, I love working up a sweat in the gym with the A/C on full-blast, but hiking? Not really my thing. That said, there are certain places I’d happily leave my comfort zone behind for, and the Elk Mountain Trail is one of them. It’s a top contender for the best outdoor adventure in Oklahoma, featuring stunning views, diverse flora and fauna, unique rock formations, and more.

Located in the beautiful Charon’s Garden Wilderness in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, this two-mile hike leads to the summit of Elk Mountain, boasting gorgeous, 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. The trail will test your navigational skills, but that’s part of the fun.

The trail isn’t clearly marked, but as long as you keep a map handy, you shouldn’t have any trouble staying the course. Natural rock staircases lead up the mountain, but the incline is gradual, and the total elevation gain is less than 600 feet. This places the hike squarely in moderate territory, though it involves some minor bouldering near the top. It’s still dog-friendly, however, so feel free to bring your best pal. They’re good at sniffing out the trail, too!

Beautiful year-round, the Elk Mountain Trail features dense foliage that turns color in the fall and numerous interesting rock formations. Unlike on many trails, the adventure doesn’t end when you reach the summit. In fact, it’s just getting started. Some hikers have reported spending hours exploring all the nooks and crannies on the plateau.

You’ll find hidden caves and scenic overlooks that showcase the lush greenery and undulating peaks that characterize this beautiful region. The views of Sunset Pool, a sparkling lake on the valley floor, are pretty amazing, too. And since the trail is part of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, it’s one of the best places in the state to observe native wildlife, such as bison (just remember to always maintain a safe distance!). There’s also a diverse array of plant life, especially if you visit during the warmer months. From cacti to a spiky purple wildflower that looks like a miniature pineapple—I know that sounds like science fiction, but I promise it’s real—Mother Nature did some incredible work here.

One of the best things about the Elk Mountain Trail, and the WMWR as a whole, is the peace and quiet. Since this particular hike is a bit off the beaten path, it’s usually not very crowded, and many people have reported finding themselves alone the entire time.
